Your Complete Engagement Photo Guide
Introduction: Why This Guide Matters
Your engagement session isn’t just a photo shoot — it’s the beginning of your visual love story. These images set the tone for your wedding communications, save-the-dates, website, and even your home décor. But more than that, your engagement shoot is a moment to pause and celebrate your connection without the stress of the big day.
At PartyBox Oklahoma, we’ve captured hundreds of love stories. And we’ve seen it all — the outfit regrets, the forgotten shoes, the dogs who stole the show, and the weather that had plans of its own. So we created this guide to give you everything you need to walk into your session prepared, confident, and excited.
What to Expect: Before, During, and After the Shoot
📅 Before the Session
About a week before your scheduled session, you’ll have a quick planning call with your photographer. This is your chance to finalize locations, outfit changes, special requests, and review the best time of day for lighting. (Hint: golden hour — that dreamy hour just before sunset — is our favorite.)
We’ll also go over the pacing of the shoot, travel time between locations (if applicable), and backup plans in case of bad weather. Our sessions typically last 60–90 minutes, depending on location and outfit changes.
📸 During the Session
The shoot itself is relaxed, guided, and fun. You won’t have to worry about awkward posing — we’ll direct you in ways that feel natural and candid. You’ll laugh, walk, pause, and play — and before you know it, you’ll forget the camera is even there.
We usually break the shoot into two parts:
Outfit One: Casual or slightly dressy, often in a natural or urban setting.
Outfit Two: More formal or stylish, often set at a more dramatic or visually bold location.
Expect us to cover a mix of wide shots, close-ups, detail images (like your ring), and those spontaneous moments in between.
🖼️ After the Session
You’ll receive a sneak peek within 48 hours and your full gallery in about 2–3 weeks. All images are professionally edited, delivered in an online gallery, and downloadable in high resolution. You’ll be able to order prints, use them in your wedding materials, or just relive the day with joy.
What to Wear: A Stress-Free Guide to Looking Great
Your clothing choices directly impact how your images feel. But the goal isn’t to dress like a magazine cover — it’s to look like the best version of you.
👕 Outfit Tips for Both Partners
Coordinate, Don’t Match: Choose a shared color palette of 3–4 complementary colors, not identical outfits. For example, one of you might wear blush, while the other wears navy with blush accents.
Avoid Logos and Distracting Prints: These can date your photos or pull attention away from your connection.
Texture Over Pattern: Knit sweaters, linen, chiffon, denim, and layered fabrics look great in photos. Avoid shiny or reflective materials.
Dress for the Location: If you’re hiking a trail, don’t wear heels. If you’re downtown, sneakers may undercut the vibe. Choose thoughtfully.
Consider Movement: Flowing dresses or skirts can add a beautiful dynamic feel to images.
Bring Two Looks: One outfit can be comfortable and casual, while the other can be romantic and elevated. We’ll help you transition between them.
🎨 Seasonal Color Palettes
Spring: Soft pastels, dusty pinks, sage, and cream.
Summer: Bold blues, coral, olive, or light earth tones.
Fall: Mustard, burgundy, rust, and forest green.
Winter: Jewel tones like emerald, navy, plum, or neutrals like charcoal and ivory.
👞 Don’t Forget About Shoes
We’ll be walking, standing, and maybe even twirling. Bring shoes that are stylish but practical. You can always swap into walking shoes between shots.
What to Bring: The Engagement Session Checklist
Touch-up Kit: Lip balm, blotting paper, powder, bobby pins, a small comb or brush.
Comfort Shoes: For transitions between locations or long walks.
Water + Snacks: Especially helpful for longer sessions.
Ring Cleaning Cloth: We love close-up shots of your ring.
Props: Champagne, blankets, a picnic basket, a guitar — anything meaningful that feels like you.
Pets: Yes, you can bring your dog! Just bring a handler or leash and let us know in advance.
Choosing a Location: Where to Tell Your Story
We offer location suggestions during our planning call, but here are a few of our favorite types of spots:
Urban Backdrops: Brick alleys, murals, downtown rooftops
Nature Scenes: Lakes, trails, open fields, wooded areas
Iconic Spots: Lake Hefner Lighthouse, Scissortail Park, Myriad Gardens
Sentimental Places: The coffee shop you met at, your backyard, your future wedding venue
Pro tip: You can combine two locations if they’re close by and time allows — one casual, one dramatic.
Weather, Reschedules, and Flexibility
Oklahoma skies can be dramatic. If extreme weather threatens your session, we’ll work with you to reschedule or adjust as needed. A little wind or cloud cover is totally fine — it often makes for better photos!
We also build in flexibility for:
Unexpected traffic or delays
Longer outfit changes
Quick location pivots
